Reverse Engineering

The nuclear industry uses reverse engineering as a means to obtain replacement parts that are obsolete, or cannot be obtained for a reasonablecost or within a reasonable amount of time.  The goal of reverse engineering electrical and electronic equipment is typically to create a replacement that looks and functions the same as the original, fits with the same space, and interfaces with the plant in the same manner. The majority of modern equipment replacements use digital technology, which may be difficult or impossible to qualify for some applications and requires cost design changes.  Equipment rendered obsolete by the original manufacturer or by the unavailability of discrete components can be reengineered and produced using new analog components minimizing the impact to the plant.
